Four Ways to Remove Carpet Stains Naturally

You’ve felt that slow-motion horror when you see a spill happening and you just can’t reach it in time. When you’re trying to find a way to manage the aftermath of a spill on your carpet, there are plenty of natural remedies you can reach for before resorting to harsh chemical treatments.

Vinegar
Vinegar is the superhero of all-natural cleaners and can be used on almost anything, including carpet stains. Blot up as much of the stain as possible, then spray it with vinegar. Allow the vinegar to sit for about 10 minutes, then blot it away as well. Consider adding vinegar’s trusty sidekick, baking soda, to your cleaning arsenal to give its stain-fighting power an extra boost.

Cornstarch
Cornstarch can be blended with liquid (milk or water) into a paste that can help to lift ink or oil-based stains. Spread it on to your stain, let it dry, then vacuum it away. Cornstarch can also help remove unpleasant smells if sprinkled over your carpets and vacuumed.

Salt
Even red wine is no match for the stain-fighting power of salt. Pre-clean a wine spill with white wine, water and a sponge, then sprinkle a thick layer of salt over the stain. Allow it to dry, then vacuum it away.

Water
Sometimes a little water and some elbow grease can work wonders on a stain from fruit juices, beverages and proteins. Blot away at the stain repeatedly with a clean towel, but don’t rub the stain. If your stain comes from candle wax, melted crayons or gum, using ice to harden the substance can also help you remove it more easily.
The best way to remove carpet stains is by not allowing them to happen at all. Ask your family to limit eating and drinking to specific areas of the home, and require shoes to be removed when people enter your home. By limiting the potential for stains to happen, you’ll make clean up a lot easier on yourself in the long run.
